Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ; better known as ‘Corpus Christi.’ As we are fortunate enough to receive Holy Communion at least weekly, sometimes it’s difficult to understand how radical it really is. Our God comes to us and commands us to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood; not only that, we also receive His Soul and Divinity. As Catholics, we take Christ at His Word, that this is not mere symbol, but Christ Himself; for those brief moments after Communion, we have God Himself within us! This is not just an extreme idea for us today; it’s the reason so many of Christ's disciples abandon Him (Jn. 6:66), and why St. Paul warns us so severely to receive the Eucharist with reverence (I Cor. 11:27-30). Even today, there are people in the world who are killed for proclaiming the Real Presence (Somalia, India, China, etc.). So next time you receive Christ in the Eucharist, whether this is your ninth or nine-hundredth time, take some quiet time to sit with Him in worship and thanksgiving.
And though the Liturgy is the foremost way we receive Christ, come worship Him in Eucharistic Adoration every Friday from 11am-1pm. If you're looking to deepen your relationship with the Eucharist, come to Wine & Wisdom starting October 5th!
