Jesus makes things easy for us who have short memories. Just two commandments to remember, and if we follow them they mean more than any other sacrifices we might make. But they are challenging ones. Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, strength. With our everything. Above all else. Putting Him first. Before family, job, money. Easy to say but hard to do. A prayer of St. Teresa of Jesus says “Whoever has God wants for nothing, God alone is enough.” Are things in my life in the right order? And if we do love God with everything we have, the second commandment shouldn’t be difficult, right? But there are some days that make it tough. Mother Teresa gave us an example. (These Teresas seem to have it all together.) She said “I see Jesus in every human being.” Every human being? Including whiny children, sassy teens, impatient drivers, rude clerks, phone solicitors? They are all our neighbors and they too are made in the image of God, whom we are to love above all. Maybe its time to rearrange priorities. I’m going to ask the Teresas for help.
