As we approach the Feast of St. Patrick, we are reminded of the profound faith and legacy of this beloved saint. Born in Roman Britain and taken captive by Irish raiders as a young man, Patrick spent years in slavery before escaping and returning to his homeland. However, instead of harboring resentment, he felt a calling to return to Ireland as a missionary, bringing the light of Christ to the very people who had once held him captive. St. Patrick's life was deeply intertwined with music, both as a way to express his faith and make connections with others during his missionary work in Ireland. He used the melody of local tunes to spread the message of Christianity, blending the music of the Irish people with the hymns of the Church. His famous Lorica, or "Breastplate Prayer," reflects the strength and courage he drew from his faith: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me…” Like the melodies that spread hope and joy through the streets of Ireland, may we, too, be instruments of peace and faith in our own communities. Whether through song, prayer, or acts of kindness, let us follow the example of St. Patrick, spreading Christ’s love wherever we go. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Marita O’Connell, Coordinator of Music
