One of the most interesting aspects of the Catholic Faith is the tension between the individual and the communal expressions. We say the words ‘I believe…’ in the Creed, because we can only attest to our own Faith; at the same time, we sa it together, standing in unison. In Faith Formation, we remind each individual family that they are the primary teachers of the Faith;but we still offer communal learning in either Religious Education or in the Catholic School System. Just like many things in the Catholic Faith, the answer is ‘Both/And.’ We are called to worship with one another as a community but warned against worshipping the ‘community’ itself (treating the Church like some kind of ‘like-minded’ club). The best example of this is seen in Baptism: the individual child is baptized and freed from sin, but also welcomed into the larger family of the entire Catholic Church! - Tony
I didn’t have many ‘mom friends’ from church when I became a mom 10 years ago. We weren’t friends with other Catholic couples having babies at the same time as us. I have learned along the way that having that tribe of like-minded parents is essential to good parenting and bringing our kids up in our faith. We learn from each other, look to one another for support and encouragement, and especially pray for each other. I wish there had been something like this to connect us with other families who were walking the same walk as us at the beginning. - Karissa
To encourage community amongst the families of our youngest/newest parishioners and to also assist each individual family, we have teamed up to host a ‘New and Nearly New’ Parents Social Night. Whether it’s a mother on her 3rd child encouraging another on her 3rd trimester; or a ‘girl-dad’ who just needs another male to share a drink with, we’ll gather together on Saturday, January 20 after Mass for some food and fellowship.
